Portuguese — “little train”, the origin of “tren”
Trenzinho defence uses the Portuguese origin of the tren lock’s name, from which the clipped English “tren” derives.
Etymology. Trenzinho means “little train” — the image is of the bodies stacked in line, as they are in the truck. The English form drops the diminutive and most of the word; the full Portuguese term still appears in Brazilian instructional material.
Mechanics. The ankle has reasonable range in extension and much less in rotation, and the lock applies both at once. That is why the late answer targets the rotational component specifically: spinning to face removes the plane the joint has least reserve against, buying the moment the hook break needs.
