Standing strangle defence

Descriptive — strangle defence on the feet
Standing strangle defence is the general descriptive form, covering rear strangles met while both players are still on their feet.
Etymology. The broad phrasing exists because the standing context, rather than the specific grip, is what reorganises the defence. Whether the finish would have been a rear naked choke or a variant matters less than the fact that the defender still has their feet.
Mechanics. Standing gives the defender level changes, footwork and the option of choosing how they go to the ground — none of which the grounded version offers. The controlled sit-down is the clearest example: conceding the takedown deliberately beats being dragged down with the strangle already closed.
