Backpack choke escape
Also known as Standing RNC Escape — the canonical term used on this site.
Colloquial — the attacker rides like a backpack
Backpack choke escape is the colloquial name for standing RNC defence, from the image of the attacker riding the standing defender’s back like a pack.
Etymology. “Backpack” is informal no-gi vocabulary for back control taken on a standing or turtled opponent, with the attacker’s weight hanging rather than seated. It names a real positional distinction: hanging weight behaves differently from the grounded version.
Mechanics. Hanging weight is also the vulnerability. Dropping level suddenly makes the attacker’s mass work against their own grips, which is what the shuck exploits; a lateral step toward the strangle side then peels the position rather than fighting the hands.
Cross-reference. “Standing rear naked choke defence” is the expanded form. Full escape coverage on Standing RNC Escape.
