Standing rear naked choke defence

Standing rear naked choke defence is the expanded form of standing RNC defence, spelling out the acronym most rooms use in speech.

Etymology. “Rear naked” describes a strangle from behind using no clothing — naked meaning gripless rather than anything else. The standing qualifier matters because it changes the escape entirely: on the feet the defender has level changes and footwork the ground version denies them.

Mechanics. Dropping level and shucking the backpack is the early answer, before the seatbelt consolidates. A lateral step to the strangle side follows, and sitting deliberately to the mat is the controlled concession — far better than being dragged down with the choke already set.
