Sacrifice throw from guard

Sacrifice throw from guard is a descriptive name for the butterfly sumi gaeshi — naming the sacrifice (sutemi) throw launched from butterfly guard.

Etymology. “Sacrifice throw” translates the judo idea of giving up position to throw; “from guard” locates it in butterfly. The label names the technique by its category rather than the sumi-gaeshi term.

Mechanics. The bottom player uses hip mobility to load the opponent over the top: rolling backward under them while a hook elevates one leg turns the guard into a launch, the hips supplying the lift that sends the opponent overhead as the bottom player sacrifices their own base.
