Rear trip from butterfly

Also known as Butterfly Sumi Gaeshi — the canonical term used on this site.

Names the rear-trip butterfly sacrifice

Rear trip from butterfly is a descriptive name for the butterfly sumi gaeshi — naming the rearward trip-and-roll the sacrifice produces.

Etymology. “Rear trip” describes catching the opponent and rolling them backward over the bottom player; “from butterfly” locates it in the guard. The label foregrounds the backward direction of the throw.

Mechanics. The roll is a scramble for top position decided by hip height: rolling the opponent over and continuing the rotation, the bottom player comes up with their hips above the opponent’s, and the higher hips hold the structural advantage that lands them on top rather than underneath.

Cross-reference. “Sacrifice throw from guard” and “Hook sweep (sacrifice variant)” are sibling aliases. Full mechanical coverage on Butterfly Sumi Gaeshi.
