Hook sweep (sacrifice variant)

Also known as Butterfly Sumi Gaeshi — the canonical term used on this site.

Sacrifice variant of the hook sweep

Hook sweep (sacrifice variant) is a descriptive name for the butterfly sumi gaeshi — framing it as the sacrifice version of the standard butterfly hook sweep.

Etymology. “Hook sweep” borrows the name of the upright butterfly sweep; “(sacrifice variant)” marks the difference, the bottom player rolling under rather than staying based. The parenthetical distinguishes the two without renaming the family.

Mechanics. The bottom player’s posting hands and hooks create the offensive opening to roll under: gripping and elevating while sitting back commits the opponent’s weight forward over the bottom player, so the hooks can launch them once the hand control has set the angle.

Cross-reference. “Sacrifice throw from guard” and “Rear trip from butterfly” are sibling aliases. Full mechanical coverage on Butterfly Sumi Gaeshi.
