Foot sweep from bottom

Also known as Irimi Ashi Sweep — the canonical term used on this site.

Foot sweep worked from guard bottom

Foot sweep from bottom is a descriptive name for the irimi ashi sweep — naming a foot-sweep mechanic applied from the bottom of guard.

Etymology. “Foot sweep” borrows the standing term for sweeping a foot; “from bottom” relocates it to the ground game. The label frames the irimi ashi as a foot sweep performed while underneath.

Mechanics. Like a standing foot sweep, it catches the opponent’s foot before weight settles onto it as a base: timing the sweep to the moment the foot is light removes it without a fight, so the opponent loses the support and tips, the bottom player rising as their base disappears.

Cross-reference. “Leg reap sweep” is a sibling alias. Full mechanical coverage on Irimi Ashi Sweep.
