Trailing leg defence

Family Escapes & Defence

Also known as Suloev Stretch Escape — the canonical term used on this site.

Descriptive — the extended leg the attack requires

Trailing leg defence names the Suloev stretch by its one requirement: a leg left extended behind the defender while someone rides their back.

Etymology. Naming the precondition rather than the finish is deliberate, because the prevention is the entire defence. A bent knee has slack in the hamstring and nothing to stretch, so the submission has no target regardless of the attacker’s grips.

Mechanics. The position is one measurement — hip to heel — shortened three ways. Bending the knee shortens it before the grip lands, sitting down shortens it after, and the hamstring curl shortens it by force. Fighting the foot grip achieves nothing, because the grip is not what the distance depends on.

Cross-reference. “Hamstring stretch defence” is the anatomical name. Full escape coverage on Suloev Stretch Escape.
