Hamstring stretch defence is the descriptive name for Suloev stretch defence, naming the tissue loaded: the hamstring taken to length while the hip is pinned from the back.
Etymology. The descriptive form is more informative than the eponymous one for anyone meeting it cold, because it identifies both the structure at risk and the fact that this is a muscular attack rather than a joint lock.
Mechanics. Muscle tolerates length, so the travel to injury is large and the signal is slow and ambiguous — which sounds like good news and is not. Defenders calibrated on joint locks read the absence of sharp pain as room to work, and the tissue then fails suddenly rather than progressively.
