The scramble

Also known as Dogfight — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: informal

Colloquial — generic scramble state

The scramble is the colloquial name for the dogfight — using “the scramble” as the generic vocabulary for any momentary period in which neither player holds dominant position and both work toward control.

Etymology. “The scramble” with the definite article is conversational vocabulary; “scramble” alone is also widely used as a verb and as a noun. The label predominates in coaching contexts that frame the dogfight as a scramble-state rather than a specific named configuration.

Mechanics. The scramble resolves based on which player establishes connection first — the controlling grip determines whether the position completes to top, bottom, or re-engagement.

Cross-reference. “Dog fight” and “neutral kneeling half guard” are alternate names. Full mechanical coverage on Dogfight.
