Dog fight
Also known as Dogfight — the canonical term used on this site.
Training background: two-word variant
Standard — dogfight scramble position
Dog fight is the spaced-form name for the dogfight — the scramble position in which both players are on their knees fighting for control after a partially-completed half-guard sweep or pass attempt.
Etymology. “Dog fight” with a space is one of several orthographic forms (alongside “dogfight” closed-form). Both refer to the same kneeling-scramble configuration where neither player is fully established in top or bottom position.
Mechanics. The dogfight is a momentary scramble state — both players work for the chest connection or hip control that will determine whether the position resolves to a sweep, a pass, or a re-pin.
Cross-reference. “Neutral kneeling half guard” and “the scramble” are alternate names. Full mechanical coverage on Dogfight.
