Single Leg X

Also known as Ashi Garami — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: guard context terminology

Single-leg X as the ashi garami entanglement

Single Leg X is a common name for ashi garami — the foundational leg entanglement, also called single-leg X-guard.

Etymology. “Single Leg X” describes the legs crossing under one of the opponent’s like an X around a single leg; “ashi garami” is the Japanese term. The two name the same foundational entanglement, the SLX label more common in modern leg-lock systems.

Mechanics. The hip controls the line of the trapped leg: by positioning the hips against it, the attacker dictates where the leg can travel and keeps the knee aligned for attacks, so the entanglement holds the leg on the attacker’s terms. Inside position prevents the opponent from extracting the leg or hiding the heel.
