Entanglement
Also known as Ashi Garami — the canonical term used on this site.
Training background: colloquial
Generic — leg entanglement category shorthand
Entanglement is the generic shorthand for the leg-entanglement family — most commonly pointing at ashi garami as the default leg-entanglement configuration when no specific variant is specified.
Etymology. “Entanglement” drops “leg” from the broader “leg entanglement” category; the shortened form is common in coaching shorthand where the leg-context is clear from broader discussion.
Mechanics. Any leg entanglement commits the attacker’s hip into the inside space against the opponent’s hip — the connection denies the opponent the hip mobility they need to extract the trapped leg.
Cross-reference. “Ashi garami” is the most common specific entanglement; the family also includes cross-ashi, single leg X, and outside ashi. Full mechanical coverage on Ashi Garami.
