Shin choke escape

Descriptive — the shin as the strangling surface
Shin choke escape is the descriptive name for gogoplata defence, naming the strangling surface: a shin laid across the throat rather than an arm or a forearm.
Etymology. “Shin choke” is the plain-language form that predominates in MMA commentary, where the gogoplata’s Japanese-inflected name is less familiar. It describes the finish accurately — the shin bone does the compressing while the hands pull the head down onto it.
Mechanics. The attack needs the defender’s posture broken and their head pulled down onto a shin that is already threaded past the shoulder. Posture is therefore the defence: head up, hips back, and the leg cleared before it crosses the shoulder line. Once the shin is on, hand-fighting the head control beats pulling against the leg.
