Foot choke defence
Also known as Gogoplata Escape — the canonical term used on this site.
Colloquial — foot and shin used to strangle
Foot choke defence is the colloquial variant for gogoplata defence, used loosely for strangles finished with the lower leg regardless of whether the shin or the instep makes contact.
Etymology. The term is imprecise — the shin does most of the work — but it persists because “foot choke” is the intuitive description for anyone watching it happen. It is broad enough to cover neighbouring attacks from rubber guard.
Mechanics. All of them need the same two things: a broken posture and a leg high enough to cross the shoulder. A defender who keeps their head above their hips and clears the leg early never meets any of the family, which is why the defence is postural rather than specific.
Cross-reference. “Shin choke escape” is the more precise name. Full escape coverage on Gogoplata Escape.
