Pulling guard

Also known as Guard Pull — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: The common verb form — "pulling guard" rather than "guard pull."

Gerund name for the guard pull

Pulling guard is the gerund name for the guard pull — naming the act of deliberately sitting to guard rather than the position it concedes.

Etymology. “Pulling guard” describes the ongoing choice to bring the fight to the mat from the feet; “guard pull” names it as a discrete move. The two are interchangeable, the gerund favoured when describing the decision in the moment.

Mechanics. A guard pull only works if it establishes a controlling connection on the way down — a grip, a hook, a collar of contact — since connection is the prerequisite for all control; pulling without first connecting simply hands the top player a free passing position.

Cross-reference. “Butt scooting” is a sibling alias. Full mechanical coverage on Guard Pull.
