Training background: describes the grip structure
Names the over-under grip of kata gatame
Over-under side control is a descriptive name for kata gatame — naming the grip configuration, over the trapped arm and under the head, that defines it.
Etymology. “Over-under” describes the attacker’s arms, one over the opponent’s trapped arm and one under their head; “side control” names the pinning context. The label foregrounds the grip rather than the “arm triangle” finish it threatens.
Mechanics. The over-under grip wins the inside position, and inside position controls the outside: locking inside the opponent’s trapped arm and behind their head lets the attacker dictate the head and shoulder while the opponent’s free limbs can only react, never reach inside to break the control.
Cross-reference. “Arm triangle setup position” and “Shoulder choke position” are sibling aliases. Full mechanical coverage on Kata Gatame.
