Training background: functional description
Descriptive — the kata gatame control position
Arm triangle setup position is a descriptive name for kata gatame — naming the control as the position from which the arm triangle is finished.
Etymology. “Arm triangle” is the common name for the kata gatame strangle; “setup position” frames the control as the platform for the finish. The label foregrounds the position’s role as the staging point for the choke.
Mechanics. The arm triangle strangles by compressing both sides of the neck at once — the opponent’s own trapped arm against one carotid, the attacker’s shoulder and head pressure against the other; the position exists to lock both sides together, so closing the space and walking the angle completes the simultaneous compression a strangle requires.
Cross-reference. “Over-under side control” and “Shoulder choke position” are sibling aliases. Full mechanical coverage on Kata Gatame.
