Over-under back control

Also known as Harness Control — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: Descriptive term for the arm configuration

Descriptive — over-under arm configuration on back position

Over-under back control is the descriptive label for the harness configuration — back position with one arm over the shoulder and the other under the opposite armpit, closing on the chest.

Etymology. “Over-under” specifies the arm geometry; “back control” attaches the positional category. The descriptive label is used interchangeably with “harness,” “seatbelt,” and “arm harness” — all references to the same diagonal arm configuration on the back position. The over-under naming predominates in wrestling-adjacent vocabulary that prefers geometric description.

Mechanics. The closed arm loop is the prerequisite for back-position control — the connection allows the attacker to transfer weight to the back and generate strangle threats. Without the closed loop the position degrades.

Cross-reference. “Harness control,” “seatbelt grip,” and “arm harness” are alternate names. Full mechanical coverage on Harness Control.
