Octopus hook sweep

Also known as Octopus Butterfly Sweep — the canonical term used on this site.

Names the octopus butterfly hook sweep

Octopus hook sweep is a descriptive name for the octopus butterfly sweep — naming the hook-driven sweep from the octopus guard.

Etymology. “Octopus” names the clinging guard that wraps the opponent’s arm; “hook sweep” names the butterfly-hook reversal it sets up. The label combines the position and the sweeping mechanic.

Mechanics. The octopus controls the opponent’s arm and that side’s hip, and the butterfly hook elevates the leg: with the hip controlled and the leg lifted, the opponent has no base on that side and the bottom player rolls them over it, the arm control steering the fall.

Cross-reference. “Body lock butterfly” is a sibling alias. Full mechanical coverage on Octopus Butterfly Sweep.
