Names the neutral standing position
Neutral position is a descriptive name for the standing position — naming the on-the-feet exchange where neither player yet holds an advantage.
Etymology. “Neutral” marks the absence of control: both players square, neither yet on top, behind, or in guard. “Position” frames standing as a place the match begins or resets to. The label is positional vocabulary, not a technique name.
Mechanics. From neutral, neither player controls the other, so the exchange is decided by who destabilises first; the grips, ties, and level changes that follow all serve to break the opponent’s balance before they break yours, since destabilisation is the prerequisite for any standing control.
Cross-reference. “Open stance” and “Base position” are sibling aliases. Full mechanical coverage on Standing.
