Hip lock escape
Also known as Z-Lock Escape — the canonical term used on this site.
Descriptive — the only entanglement attacking the hip
Hip lock escape is the descriptive name for Z-lock defence, naming the joint that makes this submission unique among the leg entanglements.
Etymology. Nearly every leg entanglement attacks the knee, the ankle or the calf; the Z-lock attacks the hip. Naming the joint is therefore the clearest way to signal that the usual entanglement defences do not transfer.
Mechanics. The lock needs a specific diagonal-ashi geometry to load the hip capsule, so denying that geometry is the early defence. Internal rotation of the hip removes the loading angle, and a belly-turn into the attacker is the late answer — the hip tolerates internal rotation far better than the external rotation being applied.
