Estima hip lock defence attaches the Estima name to the Z-lock, reflecting the family association between this hip attack and the foot lock of the same lineage.
Etymology. The naming is a source of confusion worth flagging: the Estima lock is a foot attack and this is a hip attack, and they are entirely different submissions despite the shared surname. The “Z” in the more common name refers to the leg geometry.
Mechanics. The hip is a deep ball-and-socket with considerable range, which makes the warning slow and the load tolerable for longer than a knee — and therefore easy to underestimate. Belly-turning into the attacker converts the applied external rotation into internal rotation, which the joint handles far better.
