Guillotine counter escape
Also known as Von Flue Choke Escape — the canonical term used on this site.
Descriptive — the counter that punishes a guillotine
Guillotine counter escape names the Von Flue choke from the perspective of the guillotine player, which is the only perspective from which it is ever met.
Etymology. Naming it as a counter to the guillotine puts it in the right mental file: it belongs with the risks of attacking, not with the risks of defending. Anyone who never holds an arm-in guillotine never meets it.
Mechanics. The shoulder dropping into the gap the arm-in configuration creates is the entire warning, and it is unambiguous. Letting go costs an attack that was unlikely to finish; holding on costs a live carotid compression and, eventually, side control bottom.
Cross-reference. “Shoulder choke counter defence” is the descriptive name. Full escape coverage on Von Flue Choke Escape.
