Descriptive — names the grip shape and its trapping use
Figure-four trap defence names the kimura trap by its grip geometry, the two-arm figure-four that holds the defender’s limb as a handle.
Etymology. “Figure-four” describes the shape the arms make; “trap” describes what it is for. The combination is more neutral than “kimura trap” and travels better in rooms that reserve kimura for the finish specifically.
Mechanics. The hazard of a control grip is that it persists — defenders accept it as positional and work on with a shoulder inside a live lock for a whole exchange. Coexisting with it is the error; clearing the arm or trading position for it are the two acceptable outcomes.
