Figure-four half guard pass
Also known as Lockdown Pass — the canonical term used on this site.
Training background: describes the structure being defeated
Descriptive — passing the figure-four leg lace
Figure-four half guard pass is a descriptive name for the lockdown pass — “figure-four” naming the laced configuration the lockdown makes of the legs.
Etymology. The lockdown laces the bottom player’s legs into a figure-four around the trapped leg; the label names the pass after that shape. It is descriptive vocabulary, distinguishing this half-guard variant by its leg configuration.
Mechanics. The figure-four laces the foot line so the trapped leg cannot be freed by force; the pass works by clearing that laced foot line — unwinding or stripping the lace so the foot line no longer engages — before advancing past the freed leg.
Cross-reference. “Lockdown escape” and “Lockdown counter” are sibling aliases. Full mechanical coverage on Lockdown Pass.
