Deep half sweep

Also known as Waiter Sweep — the canonical term used on this site.

Deep half sweep as the waiter sweep

Deep half sweep, in this sense, names the waiter sweep — the deep-half reversal that lifts the opponent’s far leg overhead like a tray.

Etymology. “Deep half sweep” describes any reversal from deep half guard; here it routes to the waiter sweep, disambiguated from the broader deep-half sweep usage. The “waiter” detail is the leg held up on the palm.

Mechanics. The sweep elevates through hip mobility: holding the far leg up and bridging the hips lifts the opponent’s weight off that support, and the hip drive turns the elevation into a roll. Removing the base by lifting the leg, powered by the hips, is what reverses the position to the top.
