Deep half split defence

Family Escapes & Defence

Also known as Electric Chair Escape — the canonical term used on this site.

Descriptive — the split threatened from deep half

Deep half split defence is the descriptive name for electric chair defence, naming the guard it comes from and the splitting action it applies.

Etymology. The “electric chair” name describes the finished shape — the defender sat upright with legs forced apart. The descriptive form names the entry instead, which is more useful because the attack is defended from on top rather than from underneath.

Mechanics. This is one of the few submissions the top player defends. Denying the lockdown is the early answer, hip escaping before the split loads is the middle one, and conceding the sweep deliberately is the honest late option — giving up the position beats giving up the adductors.

Cross-reference. “Lockdown stretch escape” is the alternate name. Full escape coverage on Electric Chair Escape.
