Bear hug front

Also known as Front Body Lock — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: colloquial

Informal — front bear hug body lock

Bear hug front is a colloquial name for the front body lock — “bear hug” being the everyday word for clasping the arms around an opponent’s torso.

Etymology. “Bear hug” is common-language imagery for a tight, encircling hold; “front” places it ahead of the opponent rather than behind. The label is informal and intuitive, used where “body lock” sounds technical.

Mechanics. The bear hug controls the torso so the attacker can destabilise the opponent over a base they no longer own; controlling the body lets the attacker remove the support leg or drive the hips, taking the structure down once it has been set off balance.

Cross-reference. “Front bodylock” is a sibling alias. Full mechanical coverage on Front Body Lock.
