The developmental curriculum
A grappler does not finish escapes and then begin attacks. The core problems of the sport recur at increasing depth, breadth, resistance and autonomy for as long as someone trains, and a curriculum built on that fact looks very different from a list of techniques by belt.
A curriculum of requirements
The curriculum is a specification of developmental requirements. It says what has to be developed, in what recurring structure, with what protected floors, and what each stage of development means. It sits beneath the coaching method as the reference the method draws admissible work from, which is why it can be calendar-light: what a particular athlete works on this week is chosen in the room, from the reference, and the reference does not choose it for them.
“Universal” has a precise meaning here and it is smaller than it sounds. Four things are common to everyone: shared reference coverage of the capability foundations and the minimum complete game; a default common trunk for the true beginner; common protected safety, breadth and evidence requirements; and a common developmental identity for each internal level even once technical implementation becomes highly individual. The sequence, the repertoire, the coaching mode, the autonomy, the speed, the specialisation, the strategy and the final game are all expected to differ. A heavier grappler and a lighter one face the same requirement to keep a base under load; they will not solve it the same way, and the curriculum does not want them to.
The rank wrapper is not the developmental theory. Belts and stripes are a projection over this shape for people outside the system, applied last.
The braid
Six lanes run through the whole of development: engagement and takedown; guard, escape and viable continuation; passing and pin control; rear control and terminal reciprocity; dynamic transition and scramble continuity; and lower-body entanglement and control literacy. Together they are the minimum complete game, and the braid is not a ladder. No lane is completed and left behind. Across a white belt’s development the lanes appear at shallow depth, coach-organised and under bounded resistance; across a brown belt’s they return at expert depth, under informed resistance and mostly organised by the athlete, with some held at maintenance while the specialist work goes deep.
Inside the six lanes sit thirteen requirements, each with its own evidence and debt state. A requirement can be unknown, uncovered, at orientation, at a usable policy, response conditioned, transfer evidenced, or in maintenance, and those are tracking states rather than scores: an advanced specialist may legitimately hold some non-specialist requirements at safe viable policy and maintenance while going deep elsewhere. Across the braid run eleven emphasis horizons, from entry calibration and safety through a policy floor, reciprocal systems, cross-surface transfer, tactical integration and specialisation, and on to adversarial robustness, opponent modelling, counter-system construction and generative self-correction. They are bands of emphasis, never stages of rank and never blocks of calendar.
The foundation kernel and the common trunk
Underneath the lanes sit six foundation bundles that every grappler needs before anything else and never stops needing: threat and terminal literacy; access and coupling; support and motion; one’s own structure and reorientation; denying access and breaking coupling; and meaningful response and interruption. They are abstract scaffolding, and advanced rank never licenses neglecting a safety-critical debt in any of them.
For a true beginner the curriculum supplies a concrete default trunk of ten systems, so that a small coherent game exists across the major phases from the start: hand fight, connect and clear; single-leg control to top; sprawl, front-headlock control and the arm-in guillotine hub; guard retention by pass direction; pin survival to guard restoration; turtle to facing and wrestle-up; pass to pin, then preserve the pin; rear control and rear-naked choke reciprocity; straight-ankle-lock lower-body literacy; and armbar and elbow-line reciprocity. They are a default common trunk and not a universal final game: a coach may substitute, defer or accelerate any of them for a particular athlete.
First-stripe terminal exposure is a deliberately beginner-safe quartet:
- rear naked choke;
- arm-in guillotine;
- straight armbar;
- straight ankle lock.
Broad terminal-mechanism exposure across the neck, an upper limb and a lower limb, at shallow depth, with both roles trained. It is breadth for safety and recognition, and it makes no claim to be an exhaustive taxonomy of finishes.
White: broad structured acquisition
Twenty internal levels run from the first stripe to black belt, each carrying a developmental meaning rather than a syllabus. The first four make up the white-belt regime: broad structured acquisition with increasing live depth, substantially coach-organised and deliberately technically prescriptive. The first level is a functional common game across the major phases under genuine but bounded resistance. The second makes that game survive the opponent’s first meaningful answer: response branches, recovery, transitions, broader safe exposure and continuity. The third adds materially broader technical exposure, with triangle, twisting-arm, choke and armbar families, submission chains, later-stage defence and initial counter-offence. The fourth is transfer and integration: broad live transfer, fewer catastrophic blind spots, increasingly coherent routes, and the beginnings of self-diagnosis.
The roughly ten-to-twelve-week first-level period is a design and empirical target for a worked implementation, never an attendance or promotion rule. The pathway page walks the whole journey level by level.
Blue: depth
Blue is a genuine increase in technical and adversarial depth, and the curriculum is explicit that it is depth rather than merely more autonomy. Blue entry is broad functional live competence: reduced catastrophic gaps, an emerging personal game, and open transfer. The four stripes then go deep in turn. Standing hand fighting, chain wrestling, re-attacks, mat returns, front-headlock continuation and the integration of guard with wrestling up. Deeper leg-entanglement systems, submission depth, late defence and defensive sequencing, with controlled heel-hook practice competence where the adult no-gi context admits it. Layered attacks, dilemmas, counterattacks, transition attacks, position-to-terminal systems and proactive offence. And finally sustained self-directed problem organisation with the coach reviewing rather than directing.
Purple: self-organisation becomes the default
At purple entry the organising question changes hands. Self-organisation is expected as the initial mode: the athlete normally owns their preferred game, the states they want, their recurring failures, the opponent-response problems they are working on, their development questions and their research agenda. The coach’s contribution defaults towards diagnosis, specificity, optimisation, blind spots, technical research, specialisation, opponent preparation and stress testing. Independent organisation is not isolation.
The purple stripes then answer four successive questions about what that self-organised athlete can organise. Specialist depth and system compression: at least one genuinely deep system with a compressed decision tree, a detailed opponent-response map, efficient state acquisition, integration with the wider game, and a flexible exit when the route is denied. Anti-system robustness: the same systems surviving an opponent who knows the architecture and is attacking its assumptions, which is a different problem from being deeper. Opponent modelling and contextual adaptation: archetypes and specific opponents, rulesets, score, time and boundary, risk appetite, and updating the model when scouting is wrong. And whole-game integration and blind-spot closure: coherent seams between systems, explicit management of deliberately weaker domains, and recompilation of the whole game under broad adversarial stress.
Brown and black: expert integration to durable generativity
Brown entry is a self-organising expert grappler whose deep personal systems form a coherent whole and remain functional under informed denial, hostile style collision, contextual variation and unfamiliar cross-domain problems, without a coach supplying the organising model. Brown is not purple plus time. The brown stripes move from adaptation to deliberate opponent exploitation; from prepared work to rapid counter-system construction against emerging and unfamiliar problems, where solution latency becomes a developmental variable rather than a fixed threshold; to technical synthesis and cross-problem transfer, translation rather than mimicry; and to pre-black generative robustness, with repeated evidence of independent diagnosis, candidate generation, disconfirmation and the correction of strongly held assumptions across domains.
Black belt is durable generative grappling expertise: a game that is self-organising, coherent, specialist at meaningful depth, adversarially robust, context-sensitive, capable of modelling and solving problems novel to the athlete, capable of synthesis and of meaningful self-correction, broad enough to preserve safety and viability everywhere, and persistent across independent problems and time. It is an expertise state. It is not a technique count, a teaching credential, a medal requirement or a time-served requirement, and it is not omniscience.
Resistance and autonomy are separate dials
Two things change across the shape above, and they change independently. Resistance moves from bounded and announced towards informed and hostile: a beginner meets a partner who passes one declared route, a purple belt meets a partner who has been told the system and is trying to break it. Autonomy moves from coach-organised, through guided choice and co-organisation, to athlete-organised with review and finally self-organised by default. The coaching mode is a third dial and is selected for the problem rather than by rank: explicit instruction, technical seeding, representative learning, a hybrid, diagnostic assessment or athlete-led work can each appear at any level.
The governing rule is problem first and technical implementation second, and it explicitly permits prescriptive technical exposure where the coaching decision selects it: a beginner needs a concrete common trunk, safe recognition of a threat requires being shown it, a level requires breadth, and an athlete without an adequate solution needs one seeded. Prescription stays subordinate to the selected problem and the evidence objective, which is the difference between a curriculum that teaches techniques and one that uses them.
Blocks, gates and clocks
Progress through the shape is gated by evidence and by nothing else. The protected direction runs from capability and current admissible evidence, to an internal level, to an external rank. Promotion cannot be generated by attendance alone, by technique count, by a competition result alone, by one weighted mastery score, by time served, by lineage prestige, by coaching ability or by physical dominance, and safety gates cannot be traded away.
That is why an implementation block and a promotion clock are different objects. A block is a bounded period holding one evidence objective, and it ends when the objective is demonstrated, disproved, displaced, blocked or moved to maintenance, never because its weeks ran out. Among the evidence a gate wants is transfer: the same capability under a different partner, side, grip, entry, surface, position, phase, opponent response, speed, ruleset or implementation. At the advanced end the requirement extends to novelty, and novelty means novel to this athlete, not to grappling as a whole; a failed first hypothesis counts in the athlete’s favour when they detect the failure, revise, retest and integrate or abandon. Safety is staged
Terminal success never requires unconsciousness, injury, ballistic joint loading, forced maximal end range or deliberate maximal cervical exposure, at any level. Eligibility to attack or defend a given finish is typed by mechanism and role, and depends on current control depth, age, the ruleset and how the athlete behaves with a partner; a belt on its own never confers it, and unknown eligibility for a high-risk mechanism stays closed. The beginner quartet is the shape this takes at the start: broad and shallow, with recognition and concession trained before attacking depth. Higher up, advanced rank adds no licence for unsafe proof, and advanced athletes are expected to show stronger partner management, a sharper distinction between practice permission and competition legality, safer late-defence judgement, cleaner concession and release, and more risk awareness under unfamiliar experiments.
Specialists over a protected floor
The curriculum develops two things in parallel: a protected broad floor and an athlete-specific specialist architecture. Advanced athletes need not be symmetrical. A wrestling-first game with a modest guard, or a leg-entanglement specialist with an ordinary passing game, is legitimate, and the curriculum expects those differences rather than normalising them away. What it does not permit is catastrophic unowned domains, unsafe terminal behaviour or recurrent viability collapse: those stay visible as debt, and a strong A-game cannot erase them. The floor is the same for everyone; the building on top of it is not, and that is what “universal” was claiming all along.
Where it connects
The requirements are stated in the vocabulary of the capability architecture, chosen and sequenced for a particular athlete by the coaching method, and judged by the evidence architecture. The existing InGrappling curriculum provides practical learning sequences; as Theory of Everyjitsu is integrated further, this capability-led developmental architecture can provide a deeper structure beneath future learning paths.
