What This Is
The toe hold taken from the outside line — ashi garami and single leg X, mutual ashi, and outside sankaku. Same figure-four, same rotation and extension, taken from beside the leg rather than from inside it.
The outside line gives the toe hold something the inside line does not: room. The figure-four needs space to crunch up into, and an attacker sitting outside the knee line has it. That is why the toe hold is described as a top-side ashi attack more often than a saddle attack.
It sits alongside the outside heel hook and the ankle lock as one of three things an outside entanglement offers, and it is the one most often taken when the defender has done a good job of hiding the heel.
Safety First
Banned in more rulesets than any leg lock but the heel hook, and it breaks feet. Apply it slowly, release on contact, and treat a training partner’s foot as something you need them to keep.
The Invariant in Action
Outside rather than inside decides the set, and on this line the toe hold sits with the outside heel hook and the ankle lock rather than with the inside trio.
The figure-four is the fulcrum and the foot is the lever. Grip geometry is the whole technique.
Across the natural range rather than along it, which is where the short warning comes from.
The hip controls the line of the leg, and the outside position is what keeps the foot presented rather than tucked away.
Defence and Escape
Tuck the toes and point the foot hard. The palm needs the ball of the foot, and a pointed foot with curled toes denies it.
Rotate toward the torsion rather than away from it, bleeding the twist while you work.
Clear the knee line and extract. The outside position leaves you freer to do this than the saddle does; see the toe hold escape for the staged version.
Setup and Entry
From ashi garami and single leg X
The primary. Sitting top-side gives the space the figure-four needs, which is why the position is preferred for this attack over the saddle.
From outside sankaku
The triangle holds the leg without effort, so the attacker can arrange the grip at their own pace. The most controlled version.
From mutual ashi
A shared entanglement, with the usual caveat that a shared configuration offers the same attack to both players.
The Mechanics
Figure-four the wrist with the palm on the ball of the foot and the toes pointed toward the defender’s own backside. Nothing about the finish works if this grip is wrong.
Rotate and extend as one action. Sequenced, it gives the defender the gap they need to follow the rotation out.
Crunch up rather than lying back. The outside position offers the space; using it is what separates this from the cramped saddle version.
Position Requirements
Top-side position. Flat on your back beside the leg, the figure-four has nowhere to close.
The knee line held. The finish is at the foot and the escape is at the knee.
A foot that is not fully pointed. This is the whole defence, so it is also the whole requirement.
Common Errors
Attacking from underneath. The grip needs room to close and lying flat removes it.
Gripping the toes. Painful, ineffective, and how people get hurt for nothing.
Chasing it while the heel is available. The outside heel hook is the stronger attack from the same control.
Drilling Notes
Drill the crunch — getting top-side and closing the figure-four with room to do it. It is the part the saddle version cannot teach.
Drill the grip slowly with a partner who taps on contact rather than on load. There is no benefit to feeling the end of this one.
Ability Level Guidance
Proficient. The grip is learnable quickly; knowing when the heel is genuinely gone and when the foot is genuinely available is what takes time.
Ruleset Context
Legal in ADCC and most submission-only rulesets, banned in IBJJF below brown belt, and banned outright in several others. The outside entanglements that carry it are broadly legal by comparison.
