What This Is
The inverted armbar extends the elbow from the opposite side to the standard armbar: the arm is supinated — thumb up, palm away — and the fulcrum is the attacker’s chest, shoulder or the mat rather than their hip. For the attack, see Inverted Armbar. The “violin” position, with your arm held against the side of their head and the elbow pointing up, is the recognisable form.
The reversal is the whole defence. Standard armbar defence assumes a pronated arm levered over a hip, and its answers — hitchhiker, stack toward the hip, elbow-line work — are built on that geometry. Here the rotation is the other way round, which means the single most useful thing a defender can do is pronate: turn the thumb down and the submission loses the alignment it needs. That instruction is the opposite of what the armbar escape teaches, and applying the wrong one costs the middle stage entirely.
It appears from mount and side control as an opportunistic catch rather than a committed attack — the attacker spends nothing to try it and keeps the pin either way, so it turns up whenever an arm reaches through and not otherwise.

Safety First
Tap on the extension, not on pain. The specific hazard here is the wrong-direction escape: a defender running standard armbar mechanics rotates the arm the way that tightens this one, and the resulting injury happens during what felt like an escape attempt. If you are not certain which armbar you are in, stop rotating and tap.
Defence Timing — Early, Middle, Late
Early — the arm is exposed and the wrist has not been controlled
Elbow tuck. Keep the elbow bent and pressed against your own body before anyone takes the wrist. The submission needs a straightening arm with a controlled wrist; a bent elbow held to the ribs supplies neither. This is the same discipline the straight arm shoulder lock escape teaches, applied to a different finish — reaching through to the far side from underneath is what donates the arm. The exit is mount bottom, unchanged.
Middle — the wrist is controlled and the extension has not seated
Pronate the arm. Rotate the thumb down, which kills the supination angle the lock depends on. This is one movement, it is small, and it is the whole middle-stage answer — the inverted armbar is defined by the supinated position, so removing the supination removes the submission. Get it done before the extension seats and the arm is recoverable in place.
Late — the extension is seated and loading
Stack and rotate. Bridge into the attacker to unload the fulcrum, and spin the arm free through the rotation the bridge creates. It lands in half guard bottom. Given the rigid fulcrum and the poor warning, this is one committed attempt rather than a place to work — if the arm does not come free, tap.
The Invariant in Action
This is why the middle-stage answer is so small and so effective. A defender who pronates has not escaped anything positionally — the attacker still has the wrist, still has the fulcrum — but the geometry no longer produces a finish. It is the cheapest defensive action on any of the armbar-family pages, and it is available only to someone who has identified which armbar they are in.
The pattern is the same one that runs through the wristlock and the straight-arm shoulder lock: an arm that leaves the body is an arm that can be attacked, and the elbow is the reconnection point in every case. A defender who holds that one habit under pins is defending three separate submissions with it.
The ordering matters more here than on the softer-fulcrum submissions because there is no give to absorb a mistimed movement. Bridge, feel the fulcrum unload, then rotate. If the unload does not come, the spin will not work and should not be attempted.
Named Escape Techniques
1. Elbow Tuck
When it works Early stage, from mount bottom or side control bottom. Before the wrist is controlled.
- Keep both elbows bent and pressed to your own ribs under any pin. The arm that gets caught is the one that reached.
- Do not reach through to the attacker’s far side from underneath. That reach is the entry, and it is usually made while attempting an underhook or a frame that would have been better made short.
- If an arm has to go across, it goes and returns. It does not stay extended on the far side.
- Hold the tuck under pressure — the arm straightens when the defender tires, which is exactly when an opportunistic catch is looking for it.
Why it fails The reach-through underhook. Defenders trying to escape a pin extend an arm past the attacker’s body, which is both a reasonable escape attempt and the donation this submission waits for. Make the underhook short and deep rather than long and reaching.

2. Pronate the Arm
When it works Middle stage. The wrist is controlled and the extension has not seated. The defining answer.
- Identify the rotation: thumb up and palm facing away from you is the inverted armbar. Thumb down over a hip is the standard one, and the answers are opposite.
- Rotate the thumb down — pronate — turning the forearm against the supination the lock requires.
- Bend the elbow as the rotation happens if you can. Rotation alone defeats the alignment; rotation plus a bend also restores range to the joint.
- Bring the arm back to your ribs and re-establish the tuck from Mount — Bottom.
Why it fails Rotating the wrong way, which is what happens when the defender is running standard armbar defence. Supinating tightens this submission. The identification has to come first and it takes a moment most defenders do not spend.

3. Stack and Rotate
When it works Late stage. The extension is seated. One committed attempt; lands in half guard bottom.
- Bridge into the attacker — toward the fulcrum, not away from it. The bridge unloads the chest or shoulder the elbow is being extended against.
- Feel the fulcrum give. If it does not, the rotation will not work and this is the moment to tap.
- With the pressure off, spin the arm free through the rotation the bridge opened — pronating as it goes.
- Follow the arm with your hips and recover to Half Guard.
Why it fails Spinning before bridging. Against a rigid fulcrum with the extension seated, the defender’s rotation loads the joint rather than freeing it — this is the injury mechanism described in the safety note, and it occurs during escape attempts. Bridge, confirm the unload, then rotate.

What Causes Escapes to Fail
This is a low-percentage catch on a donated arm and it almost never appears against a defender who keeps their elbows home. The danger is not how often it lands but how it fails: the standard armbar defence actively worsens it, so the injuries happen while the defender believes they are escaping.
Running standard armbar defence
The rotations are opposite. Supinating — correct against a standard armbar over the hip — is what this submission needs. A defender who applies the trained answer without identifying which armbar they are in supplies the alignment and often the force. Identify the thumb direction first.
The reach-through underhook
Extending an arm past the attacker’s far side from underneath is a reasonable-looking escape attempt and the entry this submission waits for. Underhooks from the bottom should be short and deep; an arm that reaches is an arm that has isolated itself.
Spinning before bridging
The fulcrum here is rigid — chest, shoulder or mat — with none of the give a hip provides. Rotating against a seated extension adds the defender’s force to the joint. The bridge has to unload the fulcrum first, and if it does not, the escape is not available.
Waiting for a familiar pain signal
The rigid fulcrum removes the small amount of give that makes a standard armbar’s late stage readable, so the warning arrives later relative to the load. Tap on the extension being applied rather than on it hurting the way an armbar hurts.
Counter-Offensive Options
Recover guard on the spin. The late-stage bridge-and-rotate lands in half guard bottom rather than merely free — playing it through to the guard rather than stopping at arm recovery is the difference between surviving and improving. See Half Guard.
Underhook off the pronation. The pronating rotation brings the arm back toward your own body along a path that finishes where a short underhook wants to be. Continuing the movement into the underhook converts the defence into the start of a pin escape — see Mount Escape Techniques.
Punish the commitment from mount. An attacker who takes the violin position from mount has committed both hands and their head position to one arm. Their base is narrow and forward for exactly as long as the attempt lasts, which is the cheapest moment for a trap-and-roll.
Drilling Notes
Which-Armbar Reps
Partner sets either a standard armbar or an inverted one, without announcing. Defender names it by the thumb direction before doing anything. Twenty repetitions, no load. This is the drill that prevents the injury mechanism on this page — the identification is trivial once trained and disastrous when skipped.
Pronation Reps
Partner controls the wrist in the supinated position and applies no extension. Defender drills the pronate-and-tuck as a single motion. Fifteen repetitions each side. Small movement, big effect — the point is to make it automatic rather than considered.
Bridge-Then-Spin, Light Only
Partner seats a light extension against a soft fulcrum. Defender drills bridge first, confirms the unload out loud, then rotates. Never run this against a firm fulcrum or with real extension — the whole point of the drill is the ordering, and the ordering can be trained at a fraction of the load.
Ability Level Guidance
Developing
Elbows home under pins, and short underhooks rather than reaching ones. You are unlikely to meet this submission yet, and the habit that denies it is the same one that denies the wristlock and the straight-arm shoulder lock — three submissions defended by one posture.
Proficient
Learn to identify the rotation before responding, and add the pronation as the standard answer. The identification is the safety-critical skill here: the trained armbar response makes this submission worse, so the read has to precede the reflex.
Advanced
Add the bridge-and-rotate with the ordering drilled, and learn to read the fulcrum — chest, shoulder or mat — because how much it gives decides whether the late stage is worth attempting at all. At this level the honest judgement is that a seated inverted armbar against a rigid fulcrum is usually a tap.
