What This Is
The Aoki lock attacks the inside of the knee. For the attack, see Aoki Lock. The attacker takes a reverse ashi configuration, traps your heel under their armpit, and applies compression and torsion to the medial knee structures — a different control point and a different loading direction from any heel hook.
The armpit is the tell and the target. Every other attack from this entanglement holds the heel in the hands; this one clamps it under an arm and uses the whole torso as the lever. That means grip fighting achieves nothing — there is no grip. It also means the attack announces itself by a body rotation rather than by a hand arriving, which is what makes it easy to miss.
The four universal principles still govern the entanglement, and they are worth reading first. What they do not cover is the reverse rotation, and recognising that rotation early is the whole of the defence here.

Safety First
Tap early. The specific hazard is unfamiliarity on both sides: the defender does not recognise the configuration and the attacker does not know how fast it loads. If your heel is under someone’s armpit and their body is rotating, that is the submission — do not wait to find out what it feels like at the end.
Defence Timing — Early, Middle, Late

Recognise the reverse-ashi rotation and square your hips before the heel arrives. The configuration has to be built before anything can be applied, and building it requires the attacker to rotate into a reverse position. Squaring your hips back toward them denies the angle the same way it denies the diagonal-ashi geometry elsewhere. The exit is a standard ashi engagement — still contested, without this attack in it.
Middle — the heel is under the armpit and the compression has not loaded
Straighten the leg and extract the heel from the armpit grip. A bent leg feeds the clamp; a straight one is harder to hold under an arm and travels out along its own line. Straighten and pull along the length of the leg rather than trying to twist free — the clamp resists rotation and does not resist extraction nearly as well.
Late — the medial compression is loading
Straight-leg stall while feeding the foot clear. Keeping the leg rigid resists the compression component and buys the seconds needed to work the foot out of the armpit. Survival, and a short one — this builds quickly, so tap early rather than exploring it. There is no version of a loaded medial knee that rewards patience.
The Invariant in Action
This is why the early answer is a hip movement rather than a hand movement. Grip-fighting habits built against heel hooks transfer badly here, and the defender who waits for a hand to arrive waits through the only window that mattered.
The practical consequence is that the middle-stage answer and the late-stage answer are the same movement at different levels of hope. Straighten and extract while there is room; straighten and hold when there is not. There is no third option that works on a joint with no range in the loaded direction.
The error is the same one that appears across the leg-lock system: pulling the foot before changing the leg. On heel hooks it costs the escape. Here, on a joint with no range in the loaded direction, it costs more than that.
Named Escape Techniques
1. Square the Hips Against the Reverse Rotation
When it works Early stage. The attacker is rotating into reverse ashi and the heel has not reached the armpit.
- Read the rotation. The attacker turning their body into a reverse configuration is the attack starting — no hand has to move for it to be underway.
- Square your hips back toward them, denying the angle the reverse position needs.
- Use the free leg against their hip to hold the square, the same tool the four principles use for extraction.

Why it fails Waiting for a grip. There is no grip to wait for — the control point is an armpit. Defenders trained to monitor hands see nothing happening and let the configuration build unopposed.

2. Straighten and Extract the Heel
When it works Middle stage. The heel is under the armpit and the compression has not loaded.
- Straighten the trapped leg fully. A bent leg gives the armpit a shape to hold; a straight one does not.
- Pull along the length of the leg — out through the line of your own femur, not sideways or in a twist.
- Drive the free-leg foot into their hip at the same time to create the separation the extraction needs.
- Recover the leg and re-establish the entanglement or disengage.
Why it fails Twisting to get free. The clamp resists rotation well and extraction poorly, so twisting fights the strong axis and loads the knee at the same time. Straighten, then pull straight.
Ability level: Proficient
3. Straight-Leg Stall
When it works Late stage. The medial compression is loading. Survival, and briefly.
- Lock the leg straight and keep it rigid. The rigidity resists the compression component directly.
- Work the foot toward the open side of the armpit while holding the extension.
- Keep the hips squared. Letting them turn back to the reverse angle restores everything the early answer denied.
- Tap as soon as the medial line loads. This builds quickly and the knee has nothing to give in that direction.
Why it fails Treating it as a position to hold. The stall is a few seconds of resistance on a joint that fails without much warning, and the attacker’s torso does not tire the way hands do. Feed the foot clear or tap.

What Causes Escapes to Fail
This is a low-percentage finish that is dangerous out of proportion to how often it lands, because few people on either side of it recognise the configuration. The attacker gives up nothing to try it and keeps the entanglement when it fails. Recognition is the defence; everything after it is what to do once recognition has already failed.
Watching for hands
There is no grip in this submission. Defenders monitoring the attacker’s hands see an empty picture while a reverse configuration builds around their leg. The tell is a body rotation, and it is visible well before the heel is anywhere near an armpit.
Pulling a bent leg
A folded leg is exactly the shape the armpit clamps on, and yanking it loads the medial knee with the defender’s own effort. Straighten first — it changes what the attacker is holding before it changes where your foot is.
Twisting to escape
The clamp is strong against rotation and weak against extraction. Twisting picks the wrong axis and adds torsion to a joint already receiving it. Pull along the length of the leg.
Riding it to learn what it feels like
The medial knee has no range in the loaded direction and the force is torso-driven, so it escalates abruptly. Partners applying it are often as unfamiliar with the timing as the defender. There is nothing useful at the end of this one.
Counter-Offensive Options
Attack the reverse position. An attacker rotating into reverse ashi has committed their torso to an angle and briefly has less control of your free leg. Squaring up and re-entering the entanglement on your terms is available in that moment — see Ashi Garami.
Come out the back on the extraction. Straightening and pulling along the leg line often carries the defender’s hips away from the attacker entirely, which is a disengagement rather than a scramble if taken through.
Return to the heel hook exchange. The Aoki is one attack among several from this entanglement. Denying it puts both players back into the exchange the four principles already govern.
Drilling Notes
Rotation Recognition
Partner sits in ashi and periodically rotates toward the reverse configuration without touching the heel. Defender calls it and squares up. No submission, no load. This is the only cue that makes the early answer available and it is invisible to grip-watchers until it is trained.
Straighten-Then-Pull
Partner clamps the heel under the armpit with no compression. Defender drills straightening the leg fully before extracting. Twelve repetitions. Deliberately try the bent-leg pull once so the difference is felt rather than described.
Attacker Calibration
Worth running for the attacking side specifically. Apply the lock at minimal load and have the defender report the first sensation. Most people applying an Aoki have no idea how little travel it needs, and that ignorance is the main injury risk in training.
Ability Level Guidance
Developing
Learn that a knee attack exists which uses no grip, and tap early inside any entanglement where your heel ends up under someone’s arm. That is the whole appropriate response at this level.
Proficient
Add the rotation read and the straighten-and-extract. This is where the submission appears, and where the grip-fighting reflex built against heel hooks has to be widened to include configuration reads.
Advanced
Contest the reverse rotation as an exchange rather than a threat — denying the angle while continuing to attack. At this level the configuration battle is continuous and the Aoki is one of several things a lost angle costs you.
