Reset rule
Reset when the attacker forces a tap or holds a confirmed dominant entanglement for five seconds, or the defender extracts to neutral. Role rotates after each reset.
Top wins by
Force a lower-limb tap, or secure a confirmed one-sided dominant entanglement (outside sankaku or game over) and hold for five seconds.
Bottom wins by
Extract the trapped leg to a neutral 50/50, or wrestle the hips free to a neutral scramble.
Game Description
The second rung. The attacker has come up to the outside heist — seated on the opponent’s hips off an outside-ashi come-up — with the shotgun grip on the leg. It is a dominant, controlling position but not yet a finishing one: the rung asks the attacker to convert the seat into a finishing outside entanglement (outside sankaku or game over) or to finish from there. Having owned the dominant finish on rung one, the grappler now earns the position that leads to it.
How to Run This Game
Setup: Attacker seated on the hips in the outside heist, shotgun grip secured. Defender’s leg controlled but the finishing line not yet set.
Top wins by forcing a lower-limb tap, or by securing a confirmed one-sided dominant entanglement (outside sankaku or game over) and holding five seconds. Keep the hip line through the transition.
Bottom wins by extracting the trapped leg to a neutral 50/50, or wrestling the hips free to a neutral scramble.
Score: One point per win condition. Role rotates. Default: no heel hooks unless agreed.
Coaching Notes
The rung trains the conversion from a positional seat to a finishing entanglement — the step players skip when they sit on the hips and stall. Reward the advance that keeps the inside space on the trapped leg. Elevated tier: the finishing positions are live.
Progressions
Down the ladder: outside ashi with a shotgun grip — the single-hook control before the come-up. For the full ladder, see reverse phase progression and the phase-ladder library.
