Reset rule

Reset when the attacker holds a confirmed dominant entanglement for five seconds or forces a tap, or the defender recovers the hook or extracts to neutral. Role rotates after each reset.

Top wins by

Thread to a confirmed one-sided dominant entanglement (outside ashi or ashi garami with hip control) and hold for five seconds, or force a lower-limb tap.

Bottom wins by

Recover the hook to butterfly guard, or extract the leg to a neutral 50/50.

Game Description

The fourth rung. The attacker starts in butterfly ashi — a butterfly hook converting to an ashi thread — with the shotgun grip. It is the entry where the outside-leg game is established from a guard exchange: the rung asks the attacker to thread the hook into a confirmed dominant entanglement (outside ashi or ashi garami with hip control) or finish. Less control than the locked outside positions above; more than a neutral scramble.

How to Run This Game

Setup: Attacker with a butterfly hook threading to ashi, shotgun grip on the leg. Defender working to recover the hook or free the leg.

Top wins by threading to a confirmed one-sided dominant entanglement (outside ashi or ashi garami with hip control) and holding five seconds, or by forcing a lower-limb tap. The foot line decides whether the thread engages.

Bottom wins by recovering the hook to butterfly guard, or extracting the leg to a neutral 50/50.

Score: One point per win condition. Role rotates. Default: no heel hooks unless agreed.

Coaching Notes

The rung trains the entry thread — the moment a butterfly exchange becomes a leg-entanglement attack. Reward the attacker who keeps the inside space as the hook converts, rather than diving for the leg and losing the hook. Elevated tier: the dominant entanglements it threads into are live heel-hook positions.
