World Choke
Also known as Japanese Necktie — the canonical term used on this site.
Training background: Alternative name for the same technique — used in some competition and instructional contexts
Descriptive — wrap-the-world Japanese necktie
World Choke is the descriptive name for the Japanese necktie — drawn from the visual resemblance between the attacker’s arm-and-leg-wrap configuration and “wrapping the world” around the opponent’s head and shoulder.
Etymology. “World” is the metaphorical descriptor of the closed-loop configuration that surrounds the trapped head and arm. The label appears in some no-gi coaching vocabularies as an alternate to the regional “Japanese necktie” naming.
Mechanics. The closed-loop configuration produces bilateral neck compression — the trapped arm and the choking-arm closure together load both carotids.
Cross-reference. “Japanese necktie” is the standard regional name. Full mechanical coverage on Japanese Necktie.
