Waiter sweep defence

Also known as Waiter Guard Pass — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: emphasises the sweep threat

Names the pass as a waiter-sweep defence

Waiter sweep defence is a descriptive name for the waiter guard pass — framing the pass as the defence to the waiter guard’s elevating sweep.

Etymology. “Waiter” names the deep-half position where the bottom player holds the passer’s leg overhead like a tray; “sweep defence” frames the pass as the counter. The label names the technique by the attack it stops.

Mechanics. The waiter guard elevates through the bottom player’s hip mobility; the defence kills that mobility, pinning the hips so the leg can no longer be lifted, after which the elevation collapses and the passer recovers the trapped leg.

Cross-reference. “Deep half far leg recovery” is a sibling alias. Full mechanical coverage on Waiter Guard Pass.
