Under side control
Also known as Side Control — Bottom — the canonical term used on this site.
Training background: descriptive
Descriptive — defending from under side control
Under side control is a descriptive name for the side control bottom position — naming the defence from beneath a side-control pin.
Etymology. “Under side control” frames the position from the pinned player’s perspective: held beneath an opponent perpendicular to them. The label is the bottom counterpart to top side control.
Mechanics. Defence begins with frames: a forearm into the neck and a hand on the hip brace the pinning weight and redirect it, opening the space to shrimp and recover guard. A frame works by redirecting force perpendicular rather than resisting it head-on, so framing the pressure aside creates the room to move where pushing back directly would not.
Cross-reference. “Pinned under crossbody” is a sibling alias. Full mechanical coverage on Side Control — Bottom.
