Tripod sweep counter

Also known as Tripod Pass — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: from the passer's perspective

Frames the tripod pass as a sweep counter

Tripod sweep counter is a descriptive name for the tripod pass — framing the pass as the counter to the tripod (and sickle) sweep.

Etymology. “Tripod sweep” names the open-guard sweep the pass answers; “counter” frames the passer’s response. The label describes the pass by the attack it defeats rather than by its own footwork.

Mechanics. The tripod sweep controls an ankle and pushes the far hip; countering it means clearing those controlling connections off the feet before advancing, since stepping in while the ankle grip and foot-push remain active hands the sweep its leverage.
