Sweeping hip throw
Also known as Harai Goshi — the canonical term used on this site.
Training background: English descriptive name
English rendering of harai goshi
Sweeping hip throw is the English rendering of harai goshi — translating the judo name, where harai means “sweep” and goshi means “hip.”
Etymology. The name describes the throw’s two halves: a hip entry like a hip throw, plus a sweep of the opponent’s leg. “Sweeping hip throw” simply puts the Japanese “harai goshi” into plain English.
Mechanics. Kuzushi here is the sustained loading of weight onto the very leg the attacker intends to sweep — drawing the opponent’s balance onto that leg so it carries their weight, then sweeping it out from under the loaded structure so they have nothing to post on.
