Standing guard break

Also known as Closed Guard Break — Standing — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: standard term

Descriptive — opening the closed guard from standing

Standing guard break is a descriptive name for the standing closed guard break — naming the standing posture from which the locked guard is opened.

Etymology. “Standing” situates the break on the feet, contrasting with the kneeling family; “guard break” names the objective. The term is plainly descriptive and widely shared, distinguishing the two break families by the passer’s height.

Mechanics. Standing up loads the closed guard until the feet behind the back are forced to open — this is the first foot-clearance of the pass, the mandatory step before the passer can advance toward the knee line.

Cross-reference. “Standing posture break” and “Log splitter” are sibling aliases. Full mechanical coverage on Closed Guard Break — Standing.
