Frames split-squat as a smash-pass variant
Smash pass variant is a loose name for the split squat pass — grouping it with the smash family because both pin the guard under top pressure.
Etymology. The label frames the split squat as one member of the broader smash family rather than a distinct pass. It is informal grouping vocabulary, with no lineage of its own, and is imprecise where the split-squat’s distinct base matters.
Mechanics. The split-squat stance distributes the passer’s weight over a wide, low base, keeping pressure on the guard while the lead leg stays free to advance; sound base over the support points is what lets the pass hold pressure without being swept.
Cross-reference. “Wide base half pass” is a sibling alias. Full mechanical coverage on Split Squat Pass.
