Shotgun armbar from the pins

Family Armbar

Also known as Top Shotgun Armbar — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: Distinguishes the top version from the guard version, which shares the grip and reverses the engine

Descriptive — distinguishes the top version from the guard version

Shotgun armbar from the pins distinguishes the top version of the shotgun armbar from the version played from the guards, which shares the grip and reverses the engine.

Etymology. The qualifier exists because the grip is the technique and the grip travels. “Shotgun” names the wrist clamped in the attacker’s armpit with their own forearm as the fulcrum under the elbow — the arm shouldered like a firearm — and that description is equally true underneath a passer and on top of a pin. Saying which side of the mat you mean is the whole work the phrase does.

Mechanics. From the pins the attacker stays square and the finish is mass descending through the joint with the hip aiming it. From the guards the same grip is finished by a back roll that takes the opponent over while the trapped arm cannot follow. Same fulcrum, same vector across the elbow, opposite directions of travel — which is why the two are filed as separate techniques rather than one attack with two entries.

Cross-reference. The guard version is on Shotgun Armbar. Full mechanical coverage of the top version on Top Shotgun Armbar.
