Training background: Classification term — describes the falling-backward mechanic

Names the tani-otoshi rear sacrifice

Sacrifice throw (rear) is a descriptive name for tani otoshi — “tani otoshi” meaning valley drop, a rear sacrifice throw.

Etymology. “Sacrifice throw” translates the sutemi idea of giving up position to throw; “(rear)” marks the direction, dropping behind and beside the opponent. The label names the throw by category and direction rather than the Japanese term.

Mechanics. The throw destabilises the opponent backward over a blocking leg: dropping into the “valley” beside and behind them while their base is committed tips them over the leg with no support behind, the sacrifice of the attacker’s own stance supplying the off-balance.
