Reverse X

Also known as Ushiro X — Reverse X Guard — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: common English term

Reverse X as the inverted ushiro-X guard

Reverse X, in this sense, is the English name for ushiro X — the inverted X-guard in which the bottom player faces the same direction as the opponent.

Etymology. “Reverse X” translates “ushiro X” (rear X); here it names the inverted X-GUARD, disambiguated from the reverse-X leg entanglement that shares the name. The two positions are distinct, so each common name routes to one of them.

Mechanics. The guard controls the foot line that decides whether it engages: the inverted X configuration of the legs traps one of the opponent’s legs and dictates the line of engagement, so the passer cannot square up or step free while the X holds the foot line locked.
