Reverse scarf hold bottom
Also known as Reverse Kesa Gatame — Bottom — the canonical term used on this site.
Training background: descriptive — English translation
Descriptive — defending the reverse scarf hold
Reverse scarf hold bottom is a descriptive name for the reverse kesa gatame bottom position — naming the defence against the reverse scarf hold from underneath.
Etymology. “Reverse scarf hold” renders reverse kesa gatame, the scarf hold facing toward the opponent’s hips rather than head; “bottom” frames the defending player. The label is the bottom counterpart to the top position.
Mechanics. Escape turns on recovering hip mobility: bridging and shrimping against the reversed pin creates the space to turn out, since the hold smothers by keeping the hips flat. Restoring hip movement to bridge into the controlling player and shift out is the engine of the escape, as with the standard scarf hold.
