Overhead throw

Also known as Hip Throw Family — the canonical term used on this site.

Training background: colloquial — emphasises the trajectory of the throw

Informal — throw from the hip-throw family

Overhead throw is a colloquial name used loosely within the hip-throw family — a catch-all for big, committed throws that send the opponent over the top.

Etymology. “Overhead throw” is informal and imprecise: it groups dramatic throws by their high, arcing finish rather than by mechanism, and is applied loosely to members of the hip-throw family. Precise vocabulary uses the specific throw name.

Mechanics. A hip throw rotates the opponent around the attacker’s loaded hip as a fixed point; the hip wedges below the opponent’s centre of gravity and the rotation carries them up and over, leverage rather than lifting strength supplying the throw.
