Octopus pass defence
Also known as Octopus — Top Perspective — the canonical term used on this site.
Training background: functional description
Descriptive — clearing the octopus guard
Octopus pass defence is a descriptive name for the octopus top perspective — naming the top player’s defence against and pass of the octopus guard.
Etymology. “Octopus” names the clinging guard; “pass defence” frames the top player’s job of surviving its attacks and passing. The label names the position by the task it presents to the player on top.
Mechanics. Clearing the octopus requires destabilising the clinging bottom player before control settles: off-balancing them breaks the deep grip’s leverage so the arm can be freed, since a settled octopus climbs toward the back, while an off-balanced one cannot maintain the cling needed to follow the passer.
Cross-reference. “Facing octopus guard” is a sibling alias. Full mechanical coverage on Octopus — Top Perspective.
