Meathook escape
Also known as Williams Guard Pass — the canonical term used on this site.
Training background: common gym language — emphasises the grip
Informal — escaping the Williams-guard arm trap
Meathook escape is a colloquial name for the Williams guard pass — “meathook” naming the deep arm trap the Williams guard hooks onto the passer.
Etymology. “Meathook” is gym slang for the heavy hooking control the Williams guard takes on the trapped arm; “escape” frames the pass as freeing it. The imagery is informal, with no lineage beyond the feeling of being hooked.
Mechanics. The Williams guard controls the passer through the trapped arm’s elbow connection; clearing that connection severs the guard’s hold, removing the leverage it uses to off-balance and recover, and freeing the arm for the pass.
Cross-reference. “Williams guard counter” is a sibling alias. Full mechanical coverage on Williams Guard Pass.
